Magdeburg – Presenting the metropolis by the river Elbe with over 1200 years of history

Welcome to Magdeburg, the city of Otto. The City, gets its name from two famous historical figures, namely the first German-Roman Emperor Otto I, who is buried in Magdeburg´s cathedral building, which is the earliest example of Gothic architecture east of the Rhine. And the scientist Otto von Guericke, who was born in the city 1602, used his so-called hemispheres experiment to demonstrate the physics of the vacuum. Today, the state capital Magdeburg, with almost 240,000 inhabitants and more than 18,000 students is not only the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt and a very green city of Germany, it is also a European city between tradition and the modern era. This can be seen and experienced in an exciting combination of culture, history and urban life, which in turn, forms the basis of our candidacy for the “European Capital of Culture 2025”.

The Magdeburg Marketing Congress and Tourism GmbH (MMKT GmbH) was founded in 1999 and is the official municipal tourism division to market the city of Magdeburg and its tourist attractions and facilities. It performs the tasks of destination management and marketing for Magdeburg, the capital city of the State of Saxony-Anhalt.
