Oulu – Capital of Northern Scandinavia
The city of Oulu is located on the western coast of Finland, on the shores of the Bothnian Bay. Being the fifth largest city in Finland and the biggest urban center in the whole of Northern Scandinavia, Oulu is your gateway to urban culture, vibrant city life and the unique nature of the Arctic.
Oulu offers its visitors plenty of attractions and activities all year round. One of Oulu’s must-see sights is the Market Square, where you can take a photo with the “Bobby”, the Market square policeman, and pop into the over 110-year-old Market Hall for local food and handicrafts.
Oulu is known as a city of technology and education and is thus an excellent destination for technical visits and camp schools. Within easy reach from the city center you can also enjoy nature activities year-round: in the winter time you can try walking, snowshoeing, skiing or biking on the frozen sea or even arctic floating in the sea; in the summer you can go stand-up paddling, canoeing or cruising right from the city center, just to give a few examples.
Oulu Airport is Finland’s second- busiest airport, with approximately 15 daily flights from Helsinki and also a direct flight to Troms in Northern Norway three times a week, making Oulu your ideal gateway to Lapland and Northern Scandinavia. Distance to Kemi is 1,5 hours and to Rovaniemi 3 hours.
There are 13 hotels with over 3.000 beds in the Oulu city area, including all major hotel chains, and a great variety of restaurants, including several Chinese and other Asian restaurants.
Oulu region is a versatile travel destination; within two hours distance from the city you can find national parks and nature resorts each with their very unique characteristics. Syöte, a fell area with Finland’s best scenery for snow-covered trees, offers good opportunities for Aurora hunting and husky, snowmobile and reindeer safaris. Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark is a rare natural environment shaped by the Ice Age and a beautiful setting for recreation and well-being. Kalajoki with its long sand dunes is one of Finland’s most popular holiday destinations. All of these destinations are ideal for camp school programs both in the winter and summer time.
